🚨 GitHub Copilot Changes You Need to Know About: Sign-Ups Paused & Student Plans Affected

I consider myself very lucky β€” I signed up for the GitHub Student Pack on April 20, literally the same day before the Copilot changes went live πŸ˜…
You’ll see in my screenshots that I still got Copilot Free, but things have definitely become more complicated.

Here's what happened and what it means for you.

πŸ“¦ What is the GitHub Student Package?
If you didn't know, GitHub offers some benefits for students, dozens of premium tools, GitHub Pro, free Copilot access, and much more. You can check the full list here πŸ‘‰ https://lnkd.in/dmGCyQ3x

β›” What Changed?
GitHub has officially paused new sign-ups for Copilot Pro, Pro+, and Student plans. At first I thought it was a bug β€” but no, it's intentional. GitHub confirmed it's "temporary" in a formal announcement, but as of May 12, 2026, there's still no clarity on when things will return to normal.

πŸ“Œ What This Means If You Signed Up After April 20th:
β€’ GitHub Copilot will be in Free mode only β€” no Pro or Student tier access
β€’ All other Student Package benefits are still available βœ…
β€’ The only Copilot plan currently available for new sign-ups is the Free tier

⚠️ Important Heads-Up:
If you search online or ask an AI assistant about redeeming Copilot through the Student Package, you'll likely get outdated information. Suggestions like reinstalling your IDE, desyncing/resyncing your account, or going through the old redemption flow β€” none of that works right now. Don't waste your time on those!
